Menu
Documents created in Microsoft Office for Mac are generally compatible with Microsoft Office for PC. Both Office for Mac and Office for PC are Microsoft products.
Compatibility Mode means you have opened a document created in a previous version of Office.
At the top, there should be a button, 'Enable Editing', then save the file to a new location as a docx file
Even if the button does not exist, click 'Save As' and make sure in the file type you choose the top option 'Word Document (docx)'

As Dave said, Compatibility Mode simply is an informational message telling you that the file was created in an older version of Word.
Compatibility mode means that the file structure does not support all of the features in your current version of Word. These unsupported features will be disabled in the ribbon, they will appear 'greyed out' and you won't be able to use them
You have to 'convert' the file structure into the current version. You can do that using File menu > Info command > Convert button. This starts the conversion process. Just follow the prompts.
If it is happening for all new, blank, documents, that means your NORMAL.DOTM file is an older version. You will have to either open it and convert it, or simply rename it and let Word generate a new one.
'Enable Editing' is a separate issue, to do with files marked as being downloaded from the internet.

A. I think Quick Repair will fix your problem -
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair...
B. To recover your document, you can try following -
1. Open Word
2. File > Info > Manage versions > Recover unsaved documents
3. File > Options > Save > Note the location of Autorecover file location > Go this location and see if your file is there.
4. If your backup option was also on, your file gets saved as .wbk..Search for all .wkk files on your c: drive between a certain date range
5. Also search for all *.tmp files between a certain date range. If you find a possible file, rename the extension to .docx or .doc.
6. Also look for files starting with ~ between a certain date range.

Thanks for taking an interest in my problem. My Office Home and Student 2016 for my iMac does not seem to match up with your advice.
I do not see Info under file which means I can not get to the Manage and Recover options.
I see New Document, New from Template, Open, Open Recent, Close but no Info.
I am staying away from my Word Documents in general now because they come up [Compatibility Mode] next to the document name.
I appreciate your advice.

Your normal.dotm may be in old format -
Close all documents
Use File>Open from within Word
Open /Users/<your login>/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content.localized/Templates.localized/Normal.dotm
Click Convert on that file.
Save and close
Exit and re-launch Word.
That 'might' fix it for you. Note that Word 16 seems to copy in a new copy of your 'old' Normal.dotm from /Users/<your login>/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates when it installs, so you might want to re-name that file.

The thread above has few more solutions like renaming the normal.dotm file..If the solution offered doesn't solve, go through the thread completely.

Hmm . . . I do not find /Users/<Your Login>Library/ Group . . . as an option.
I have New Document, New from Template, Open, and Open Recent.
Open does not lead to Users etc. It leads to an Attachments folder, Documents folder, Getting star. . .the OneDrive, and a Pictures folder. All that is under OneDrive-Personal with a cloud emblem.
I do have a computer emblem with On my mac.
I think I just lost the document. Other documents, which I fear to open, still show [Compatibility Mode].
I will go back to Pages for new work and see if I can figure out what is wrong with my use of Word later. The Compatibility warning makes me leery of Word, which I have used for years and have thousands of pages of documents in.
Somehow I saved a 40-page document showing Compatibility Mode and ended up with a blank.
Thanks again for your kindness.
I just do not have Users Login as a choice.

I'm surprised no one, so far, has asked what version of Word you have. Please go to the Word menu and choose About Word. You should have either 14.7.7 or 15.39. If it is something else, please follow these instructions to bring Word up to date, then test again:
Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection before checking for updates. Install Mac OS X updates followed by Office updates.
Install Mac OS X updates first:
To get Mac OS updates, go to the App store on your dock, and then click the Updates button to reveal available updates.
Then Install Office Updates
To get the update:
1. Open any Office application:
3. Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection
4. Go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates
5. Let AutoUpdate check for and install updates
6. Restart your Mac
After installing updates, I also suggest making a trivial change to your document, such as adding a character, then use File > Save As and rename the document in the Save dialog.

Take a peek at Word 2011 for Mac’s compatibility preferences by way of choosing Word→Preferences→Compatibility. The Compatibility preferences dialog for Word in Office 2011 lists a wide variety of specific behaviors of the application that have changed over the years. Turn specific behaviors on and off here, such as the following:
- Font Substitution: If you open a document that used a font that isn’t available on your computer, Word substitutes a font that you do have for the font that you don’t have. If you’d rather choose the font, click the Font Substitution button and then choose the font you want.
- Recommended Options For: This pop-up menu has preconfigured combinations of settings from the behavior options. You can change Word 2011 to behave like older versions of Word or even WordPerfect.
- Options: You can turn individual Word behaviors on and off in this list by selecting or deselecting check boxes. The choices are eclectic. As you make choices, the Recommended Options For pop-up button changes to let you know which set an individual choice you check belongs to.
- Default: Click this button to use the settings you’ve made as the default behavior for Word from now on. If you click this button, you must allow the Normal.dotm template to be modified in order to permanently change Word’s behavior.
- Compatibility Report: In this section, select the Check Documents for Compatibility check box to activate the Compatibility Report feature. Click the Reset Ignored Issues button to tell the compatibility checker to recheck the entire document and also flag problems you had previously told it to ignore. Click Reset All Issues button to tell compatibility checker to recheck all documents for incompatibilities even if you told the checker to never check for errors again.
If you want to check whether a document is compatible with other versions of Word, choose Toolbox→Compatibility Report.
